Whilst HYCOOL fluids being zero GWP (Global Warming Potential) and zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) = zero CO2 not only enables the end user to demonstrate his green credentials but provides the added benefit of being able to reduce the energy consumption compared to other methods of cooling and freezing.

HYCOOL consists of 30-50% potassium formate, 50-70% water and 0-1% corrosion inhibitor. Tests have been done solely on potassium formate and these show that potassium formate has an excellent environmental profile.

The tests are relevant for HYCOOL, as one of its major components is potassium formate. They show that any spill or leak of HYCOOL onto soil or into sewage pipes has little environmental impact.

Time Window Criterion
HYCOOL is regarded by the OECD as an easily biodegradable product. A product must pass the Time Window Test in order to classify as biodegradable according to OECD guidelines. HYCOOL satisfied all the requirements of the Optimal Biodegradation Test, which is to say that HYCOOL degrades by a further 60% within 10 days after a ten percent mix of HYCOOL has already degraded. The tests described above are very reliable; they prove that HYCOOL decomposes rapidly and completely in aqueous environments under aerobic conditions. HYCOOL consumes much less oxygen during its biodegradation phase compared with other common refrigerants such as potassium acetate, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.

Biodegradability in soil
Tests on decomposition in soil carried out by Jordforsk in Norway state that HYCOOL shows good biodegradability in soil even in high concentrations.

Effects on purifying plants
The Bavarian Water Authoritys report stated that HYCOOL breaks down completely and under normal conditions has no negative effect on reduction of nitrogen. Their report also shows that if HYCOOL should reach a purifying plant, no increase in their sludge index would be noted, no formation of thread-shaped bacteria would occur, and - if such would be the case - this would only benefit the oxidizing environment.

Toxicity
HYCOOL can be considered non-toxic to animals, aquatic organisms and humans.
